Ingredients

  • Ingredients Needed
  • 5 medium sized sweet yams peeled, washed, cut into pieces
  • 7 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 - 1/2 tsp teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preparation
  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Using low-medium heat add butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar to deep skillet. Quickly stir to combine the butter and sugar.
  • Add nutmeg, ground cinnamon, allspice, ground ginger and pure vanilla extract. Continue stirring to incorporate all ingredients.
  • Allow candied mixture to come to a slow simmer, before turning the stove top off.
  • Remove candied yam mixture and pour onto yams (sweet potatoes).
  • Cover with aluminum foil. Place into preheated 350°F oven and allow to bake for about 35 -40 minutes on each side.
  • Uncover and rotate yams to allow even baking and candied syrup distribution.
  • After a total of about 1 hour to 1hour 15 minutes. Be sure to check on yams to test desired tenderness.
