Waking up to the harmonious sounds of the birds chirping, and the sun rising at 6 AM are all telltale signs, that summer is in the air. More so, than any other time of the year, this is the only time I don’t mind waking up early. The first thing I do is open my curtains, welcoming all of the natural sunlight into my home. Followed by taking in a breath of fresh air.
About an hour later, it’s off to the farmers market. As I approach the farmers market table, I smile with delightment. After all, I’ve waited all year for these fruits to be in season. Admiring all of the fresh fruit on the table, and appreciating the floral smell from the ripened fruit. I start to feel like I’m in tropical heaven.
I wasn’t able to get mangoes, so it’s off to my local grocer’s. As I look to the right I spot the mangoes, and boy are they ripe. The hues of color range from reddish orange to green and yellow. There’s Mexican mangoes, Haitian mangoes and Dominican mangoes. There is no way I’m buying just one type of mango. After all, mangoes are my favorite fruit. Tropical fruits are definitely a staple in a Caribbean household. My family and my husband always express to me, about how fun it was being on the island, and having fruit literally fall at their feet. See, I didn’t get to experience this, because I came to the U.S. When I was two months old.
By the time I arrive home, and start unpacking I realize I have enough fruit to start my own farmers market, LOL. I set my peaches, mangoes and lemons aside. Now it’s time to make fresh Peach Mango Lemonade!!! I start by washing my fruit, peeling and slicing the mangoes, slicing the peaches, but leaving the skin on, because I want all of the flavor from these peaches infused into my drink.
Adding all of the fruit to the blender and adding a small amount of water to assist with the puréeing process. Taking the pureed contents and adding it to a pot, adding more water and a generous amount of granulated sugar or brown sugar. Although, it may seem like a lot of sugar, because we’re making syrup, we need the sugar to help with this process.
After about 10 to 15 minutes, I’m going to turn the stove off, and allow the syrup to cool. In the meantime, I’m going to juice the lemons. Now that the syrup is partially cooled, straining the pulp, adding it along with the freshly squeezed lemon juice, and water to a pitcher, while stirring to combine.
The great thing about this drink is you can take it from kid friendly or non-alcoholic to Adult Happy Hour by adding Peach Liquor.
It’s on to the deck to enjoy this wonderful day. “Did I forget to mention how much I love summer!!!
